Thank you for visiting our web site. Our work is focused in the areas of Health, Education and Development in underserved Tanzania communities. Through the partnership support of local and international donors, our objective is to:

  • provide relief assistance to needy communities;
  • provide support for HIV/AIDS orphans;
  • provide cancer research and treatment referals;
  • provide malaria prevention awareness; and
  • promote clean water and environmental issues. 

 

What We Do

Health

We are providingto the following health programs to the underserved villages surrounding the village of Shirati, Tanzania:

  • Village Outpatient Care;
  • A facility for cancer zonal referral for treatment of Burkitt’s Lymphoma;
  • Medical Research; and
  • Home Based Care

These programs include connecting villages with medical and social services.

  • Global Health Partnership Program

This program includes hosting of visiting medical students, doctors in training, and their professors, who will partner with us (SHED Foundation) to analyze village health issues and work to educate patients and most of all improve village health of undersaved Tanzania communities.

Education

We provide:

  •  Education grants to health care workers;
  • Assistance in basic education at secondary school level;
  • Support to children orphaned by HIV/AIDS; 
  • Work to educate patients and improve village health;
  • Facilitate/host Medical School Programs. Such program may include clinical and public health work in rural villages. (See also Global Health Partnership Program.)

 

Development

Development Assistance is provided to targeted villages through partnership with local and international donors.

  • SHED Foundation will continue to open its doors for partnership agreements;  projects; and opportunities designed to provide Health, Education, and Development to targeted underserved villages/communities in Tanzania.
  • We may enter into any arrangement with any person, group or association carrying on, or engaging in the support and promotion of any of the objectives contained in the SHED Foundation's Memorandum of Association.

ELECTIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEDICAL AND NURSING STUDENTS AND RESIDENTS IN EAST AFRICA

This is a 3 to 6-weeks program offered by the University of Southern California, School of Medicine (USC) under the auspices of SHED Foundation in rural Tanzania villages; and Shirati Health, Education and Development Foundation, US Branch.

  • Location: The site - Sota community - is 9 hours by road from Nairobi - on the shore of Lake Victoria, Shirati, Tanzania.
  • Acceptance to the program: Generally contingent on a phone interview, and is subject to space availability.
  • The experience may include, clinic work and public health work.
  • Several medical students and residents have already participated. About $20-$30/day  will be charged for room and board (Note: this rate may change sligthy.)
  • The program is hosted by Dr. Esther Lehman Kawira, a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine who has a faculty appointment at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine. She has been in Tanzania for over 23 years and speaks Swahili.
